Grace Cathedral: Fields of Prayer | 2015

San Francisco, CA

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. Fields of Prayer responded to this theme with an integrative, immersive light and sound installation through the Grace Cathedral Artist in Residence Program. The cathedral's architecture and stained glass windows were activated and rendered with moving light, transforming the entire space into a moving chamber and projecting out into the streets and onto the sidewalks. The light performance was projected in slow, scanning patterns through the stained windows of the cathedral at night, exposing parts of the cathedral that have never seen the light of day. The experience was accompanied by a live sound score that layered liturgical and non-liturgical music from around the world unified in an ambient composition.
